The task of our science of medicine, to put it briefly, is to heal the suffering man; but this simple and briefly expressed task is extremely difficult, extremely responsible, and the possibility of its fulfillment is achievable only with the satisfaction of certain well-known requirements. Задача нашей науки медицины, выражаясь кратко, врачевать страждущаго человѣка; но это просто и кратко выраженная задача чрезвычайно сложна, чрезвычайно отвѣтственна, и возможность выполненія ея достижима лишь при удовлетвореніи извѣстныхъ опредѣленныхъ требованій. Среди этихъ требованій необходимо упомянуть стремленіе установить понятіе средняго нормальнаго человѣческаго организма, ясное представленіе о нормальныхъ индивидуальныхъ отклоненіяхъ, изученіе условій, благопріятствующихъ не только сохраненію, но и процвѣтанію этихъ двухъ типовъ, изученіе причинъ, въ широкомъ смыслѣ этого слова, вліяющихъ вредно на жизнь организма; отсюда необходимость установить понятіе "болѣзни", ихъ типы, признаки, причины въ каждомъ отдѣльномъ случаѣ...
